Applied data science at unlikely places

What does that even mean? It is known to all that data science has expanded its territory across every other field. There is hardly any industry that does not use data science. Even when data science was not a well-known term companies have been using information to optimize business processes. The sheer amount of information that enterprises need to take into account has made data science an absolute necessity. Hence, no application of data science should come as a surprise. This is just a reminder of the same.

Domino’s Pizza using deep learning to optimize order delivery

Domino’s sells 3 million pizzas a day across 90 countries from 17,100 stores. That is an awful lot of pizza. Just step into the shoes of the brand for a minute and imagine: hundreds of thousands of orders coming in every hour through hundreds of different apps and in scores of different languages. Then there are the logistics of pizza delivery. Stuff can go down very easily with the competition increasing.

Domino’s uses a deep learning model which was trained with the data of 5 million orders. The initial data set was not massive but every new order is added to the repository. The model predicts the time taken to prepare an order depending on the components of the order and the situation in the store.

The Kuala Lumpur International Airport employs a holistic data science model

The authorities of Kuala Lumpur International Airport also known as KLIA and its second terminal KLIA 2 initiated a holistic digitization of the airport facilities alongside deploying an advanced analytics system. Not only does it let the airport authorities monitor every digital interaction made by the passengers with the airport to enhance services, but also optimizes ground support and security. Well, this was probably not a very unlikely example but the extent to which this system is deployed is massive, hence, worth mentioning.

The AI that raps

Who said this had to be a serious post? No one. Hence, Deep-Beat, the AI rapper, is our next feature. While I could not freestyle rap if I were paid a million ringgits this piece of artificial intelligence could look at rap lyrics and predict the following lines. Then it could employ rhythm to it. So, that is very cool, as it is.

The fortune telling AI

A researcher from MIT gathered up a database of inspirational quotes and devised an AI that could use the data to generate quotes that one would find in the pack of fortune cookies. The result was rather disturbing as it came up with messages like “A friend is a wonderful invention; but, then again so is a whole lie”.

There are AI systems that can write fiction incorporating visual data, and algorithms that can produce European classical music inspired by Mozart. Data science lies under all these great achievements. You can be a part of this movement by taking up a data science course in Malaysia.
